Skates
Four stages of progressive skating exposure, with scored competition included in every session.
A performance-focused skating progression for healthy, medically cleared junior, college, and professional players preparing for camp or the start of the season.
Four stages of progressive skating exposure, with scored competition included in every session.
Speed Foundation, Repeat the Speed, Build the Shift, and Camp Ready.
Designed for a full sheet of ice, coach/timing setup, and a maximum session length of 60 minutes.
The progression moves from true speed exposure to repeated efforts, controlled shift work, camp-style rehearsal, and reduced-volume sharpening.
Each stage page includes the operating system, three skate plans, work:rest targets, competition structure, quality gates, and simple adjustment rules.
Skates 1-3 · Establish acceleration references, add hockey-specific re-acceleration, then expose true high-speed skating.
Skates 4-6 · Transfer speed through direction change, repeat short accelerations, and build repeated-sprint ability without technical collapse.
Skates 7-9 · Move from 30-second structured shifts to 40-45-second decision shifts, then test those qualities across three competitive blocks.
Skates 10-12 · Peak density once, rehearse camp-like game demands, then reduce volume while preserving maximal intent.
Use this table to see how duration, work:rest, intensity, and the primary metric change across the framework.
| Skate | Focus | Stage | Total | Primary W:R | Intensity | Metric |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Acceleration | Speed Foundation | 56 min | 1:8 to 1:15 | 95-100% | 10 m + 20 m |
| 2 | Re-Acceleration | Speed Foundation | 58 min | 1:6 to 1:10 | 93-100% | Clean exit speed |
| 3 | Maximum Velocity | Speed Foundation | 55 min | 1:10 to 1:15+ | 95-100% | Flying 20 m |
| 4 | Change of Direction | Repeat the Speed | 58 min | 1:4 to 1:6 | 90-98% | Exit quality |
| 5 | Repeated Acceleration | Repeat the Speed | 59 min | 1:4 | 95-100% | Time loss |
| 6 | Repeated-Sprint Ability | Repeat the Speed | 60 min | 1:3 to 1:4 | 93-100% | Final-rep drop |
| 7 | 30-Second Shifts | Build the Shift | 60 min | 1:3 | RPE 8-9 | Final useful burst |
| 8 | 40-45 Seconds + Decisions | Build the Shift | 60 min | 1:3 | RPE 8.5-9 | Repeat actions |
| 9 | Three-Block Fatigue | Build the Shift | 60 min | 1:2 to 1:2.5 | RPE 8.5-9.5 | Late speed |
| 10 | Peak Density | Camp Ready | 60 min | 1:2 | RPE 9-9.5 | Final exit |
| 11 | Camp Rehearsal | Camp Ready | 60 min | 1:2.5 to 1:4 | Game intensity | Role execution |
| 12 | Sharpen + Verify | Camp Ready | 57 min | 1:4 to 1:10+ | 95-100% | Speed retained |
