The Hockey Health Brief Tool

Hockey Load Management Calculator

A simple weekly check-in for hockey athletes and parents. Count the work, check the recovery base, and make one smart adjustment before the week gets away from you.

Integrated Performance logo

Supportive guidance, not a verdict.

This tool does not diagnose injury, predict risk, or clear an athlete to play. It helps families organize the week and ask better questions.

How to Use It

Enter the week. Review the gauges. Choose the next best adjustment.

The planning display combines Hockey Health Brief guidance with a focused review of recent hockey research. It uses session categories and reported context, without RPE or an injury-risk score.

Step 1

Athlete basics

No names, emails, teams, or identifying details are needed. Entries stay in this page and clear when it reloads. Existing site services may still collect ordinary website analytics.

Step 2

Skating week

Choose a count above or enter a custom count. One row appears for each skate; 0 means no non-game skates.

Enter games separately below so each exposure is counted once. Minutes include the non-game session, including instruction and rest. They are not minutes spent skating hard. Day is optional. Input limits are form limits, not recommended training limits.

Step 3

Strength exposures

Count each strength session once. Strength has its own demands and stays separate from the hockey intensity percentage.

Include other teams and organized training. Do not recount a session already entered. Recovery activities do not add training exposures.

Step 4

Competition exposures

Each game the athlete plans to play counts as one higher-intensity exposure. Bench time and actual ice time vary; no game minutes or intensity multipliers are invented. Strength sessions are counted separately and are not assumed to be light.

Step 5

Sleep and recovery

This is a conversation prompt, not an exertion rating or a diagnostic questionnaire.

Where are you more sore than usual? (Optional)

Choose each area that applies, then its location. These describe what you notice; they do not identify an injury.

Recovery activities this week
Optional context

Compare with last week

Compare the same quantities for the same athlete. A zero means none; a blank means unknown.

Plan next week: try one change
  1. Complete your current week and select Save current week.
  2. Draft next week by editing the inputs above. Start with fixed commitments such as games, then review optional sessions with your coach.
  3. Compare the counts, minutes, schedule and recovery context below. A change in the gauge is not proof of improvement.

Edits are a draft, not a record of completed training. Change a session type only when its planned content actually changes. The saved comparison clears when this page reloads or you select Reset.

Source Logic

What this calculator uses, and what it does not assume.

The rules are intentionally simple because this tool is for athletes and parents. It does not use unsupported injury prediction, diagnosis, or clearance logic.

Youth recovery and participation

Include all organized sport and preserve time off. The no-rest-day prompt is based on AAP guidance; schedule clustering prompts are editorial conversation aids.

Weekly exposure budget

The newsletter’s 8–10 total / 3–4 high-intensity exposures describe a serious summer example. They are not universal limits, minimums, or gauge thresholds.

Sleep target

Uses current CDC age bands: 6–12 years, 9–12 hours; 13–17, 8–10 hours; adults 18–60, at least 7 hours. Individual needs vary. This updates the original newsletter bands; no athlete-specific dose is calculated.
